PEMF Safety: Basics and Who Should Ask a Doctor First

PEMF safety basics in plain words: who should talk to a doctor before using an OlyLife device, simple session habits and what to do if something feels off.

For PEMF safety, the main rule is simple: if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or use an implanted device, talk to your doctor before you use an OlyLife device. For everyone else, the basics are to start at a low level, stay within the set session time and stop if anything feels uncomfortable.

OlyLife devices are general wellness products. They are not medical devices and are not meant for any medical condition. This post puts OlyLife's own safe-use guidance in plain words.

Who should ask a doctor first

OlyLife's manual lists situations where you should not use the device and should talk to your doctor first. Here they are, in plain words.

  • Heart disease
  • Pregnancy, infants and young children
  • Lung complications
  • Impaired consciousness, or being unable to say whether something feels uncomfortable
  • A raised body temperature
  • Using life-sustaining equipment
  • A bleeding tendency, including during menstruation
  • Reduced sensitivity to heat
  • A pacemaker or any implanted electronic or metal device

This is a summary. The complete wording is on the Safe use page, and that page is the one to trust. If you are unsure about any item, ask your doctor, not a seller, and that includes me.

PEMF safety habits for every session

These come from OlyLife's guidance for the foot devices.

  1. Sit comfortably. Put your bare feet on the plates.
  2. Start low. Pick a low intensity first. You can change it from the panel or the remote.
  3. Let the timer run. Sessions run up to 30 minutes on the Tera-P90 and 20 minutes on the Tera-P90+. Stay within the set time.
  4. Rest after. For the Tera-P90, OlyLife's spec reads: "Up to 30 minutes; rest 20 minutes before another session."
  5. Stop if it feels off. If anything feels uncomfortable, stop.

There is also a built-in feature that helps. On the Tera-P90, OlyLife lists this feature: Pauses if your feet leave the plates for more than 10 seconds.

Two rules people forget

Do not use other electrotherapy equipment at the same time. That is part of OlyLife's safe-use guidance. Use one device per session.

One person at a time. A household can share one device, but each person keeps to the set session time. Infants and young children are on the do-not-use list.

Where PEMF safety research fits

Studies of PEMF look at safety as well as other outcomes. A review of whole-body PEMF mats reported no acute adverse effects but said long-term effects had not been studied.* Another meta-analysis found that reported side effects did not differ from sham.

These are independent studies of PEMF in general. None of them tested an OlyLife device. So they cannot tell you that an OlyLife device is safe for you. They are a reason to read carefully, not a reason to relax the rules above. Our guide to reading the PEMF research library shows how.

How to tell if a seller is being straight with you

A seller who cares about your safety will do a few things without being asked.

  • Tell you the device is a general wellness product, not a medical one.
  • Point you to the do-not-use list before you buy, not after.
  • Say plainly what the maker has not published, instead of filling the gap with a guess.
  • Avoid promising results, and say so when no one can.
  • Tell you to talk to your doctor if you have a health condition.

I try to do all five on this site. If you ever think I have missed one, tell me.

What a calm session looks like

A safe session is a quiet one. You are seated, your feet are on the plates and the level is low. You are not rushing, and you are not trying to squeeze in a second session. The timer does the counting for you and the device stops on its own.

If you ever feel too warm, uncomfortable or unsure, stop the session. There is no prize for finishing. OlyLife devices are built for a quiet moment to unwind, and that only works when you feel at ease.

What to do if you are unsure

  • Read the full Safe use page before your first session.
  • Ask your doctor if any item on the list might apply to you.
  • Buy only from an authorized seller, so the device and its manual are the real thing. Look-alike devices sold on marketplaces are not OlyLife products.
  • Message me if you want help finding the right page in the manual.

How a session works, step by step

The how-to page walks through a first session with pictures, from sitting down to resting afterward. See How to use for the full steps. If you want to know what PEMF is first, start with PEMF explained for beginners or the PEMF page.

Your next step

Before your first session, take five minutes to read the Safe use page from top to bottom. More guides like this are in the technology section of the blog.
